There is no bad time to visit Martinique, there are different times: the dry, breezy carême, the hot green hivernage, the carnival, the yoles, Christmas. Here is the island's calendar as we live it in Le Lamentin, and what each period changes at the villa — with, every time, the link to free nights and their real price.
Two seasons, not four: the carême (dry season) from December to April, the hivernage (rainy season) from June to November, and two months of transition. The air temperature varies little; what changes is the rain, the wind and the crowds.
December → April
The trade winds blow, rain becomes rare, days are bright and evenings cooler than in summer. It is the favourite period of visitors from mainland France, Canada and the United States: flights are full, accommodation too, and nights are booked months ahead.
January → February or March
Martinique's carnival starts after Epiphany with the Sunday parades, and peaks on the fat days: Sunday, Monday (the burlesque weddings), Tuesday (the red devils), Ash Wednesday (the she-devils in black and white, and Vaval who is burned). In 2027, the fat days run from Sunday 7 to Wednesday 10 February.
April → June
On Easter weekend, Martinicans camp by the water and prepare the crab matoutou. Then May and June are the transition months: the sea is warm, the first showers turn the island green again, and visitors become rarer.
July → October
It is hot, it rains in short showers and the island is an intense green. It is also the hurricane season, to follow with the weather forecast. In late July or early August, the Tour des Yoles Rondes goes around the island in a week, and the summer holidays fill the villas with families and residents.
November
The rains space out, the trade winds return, and the island prepares for the festivities: from late November, the chanté Nwel gather neighbours and families around Creole carols, rum and boudin. Winter flights resume in mid-November.
December → early January
December in Martinique means the return of the dry season and reunions: families from mainland France come home, residents entertain, and New Year's Eve is celebrated outdoors, by the water. It is the most sought-after period of the year, along with February.
For a dry climate: December to April, the carême. For quiet and gentler prices: May, June and November. For island life: the carnival in February or March, the yoles in late July, Christmas. At the villa, the pool is heated all year round.
The hivernage runs from June to November: heat, short heavy showers, green island. It is also the hurricane season, to follow with the weather forecast; in case of a major alert, the stay is postponed free of charge.
The 2027 fat days run from Sunday 7 February to Ash Wednesday 10 February. The Sunday parades start after Epiphany. To sleep in the quiet fifteen minutes from Fort-de-France, book early.
No: the air stays mild all year, but dry-season evenings are cooler and breezier than in summer. That is precisely why the villa's pool is heated.
